I agree. The best way to slim down is to GROW UP. Develop a more mature relationship with and viewpoint toward food. Treats are fine for special occasions like parties, company, visits, trips, celebrations, holidays and birthdays but at normal times, anyone who wants a healthy body should take a dose of Vitamin B-Mature and eat normal food, and the way to do that is LEARN TO LIKE FOOD THAT TASTES LIKE FOOD instead of food that tastes like sweets. Not everything is supposed to taste like dessert.
I saw an advertisement for Quaker Chocolate Chip instant oatmeal and I was like -- what the fudge? Since when does breakfast have to taste like chocolate chip? What's the matter with plain old quick oats (not instant) with a little honey and some raisins? Do oats taste so disgusting that they have to be shot up with sugars and artificial goops and made to taste like dessert? Another example of the candification of the American food supply and the infantilization of the American palate.

Excellent post! I know the ad you're talking about and it pisses me off every time I see it. To be honest, I also didn't read into it anything about eating disorders. I just thought to myself, CLOSE THE DOOR, IDIOT! YOU'RE LETTING ALL THE COLD AIR OUT OF THE FRIDGE!

I'm tired of ads that show skinny, airheaded bimbos in size 4 jeans stressing about their diets all the time. And you're absolutely right about substitutions. When you're trying to lose weight, you need to change your whole lifestyle and attitude toward food, and that means learning to like healthier options, not grasping at half baked "replacements" for all the habits that made you fat in the first place.

You can't possibly be a gym rat with perfect grammar like that, lol!

Srsly, a well-written and conversationally-friendly write-up on the basics of getting buff the right way: The way your body was designed to become strong and big, with broad brush strokes and not pixel by pixel. You have to have at least a modicum of faith in this iron game, because much of it seems counter-intuitive. Stay the course by following proven principles and results are pretty much guaranteed with hard, sensible work and attention to the basics. I would add that checking the ego at the door will solve many a problem.

Thanks for an informative article, Brett!

Good workin' out! :)

Brett,
Sorry it's been a while. Are you through with all forums for a while or just with DBB? As MVP says, many good people are now at smound's new forum ironjunkies.com and your presence there would be truly Cromtastic, if you know what I'm saying. Anyway, maybe forums are not your thing these days but I guess to be blunt and pathetic, I miss you, man! I know that's 'gay,' as RS would say, but the honest truth anyway.

Yeah. He came, he saw, he bludgeoned everyone with a 25 pound chemistry textbook, then ran off and left me holding the bloodied and torn banner of moderation. Thanks a lot, ya limey bastard! HA HA HA -just kidding. I still hear from Andrew once in a while. He's a good kid, and he's gonna make a trillion bucks -er... Euros- when he patents a 100% safe, sides-free, and completely legal compound 1,000 times more potent than exogenous testosterone.

Hmmm... How much Glutamine? I'm gonna go with the vitamin C logic here. Yes, ON Whey does have 5g of GLutamine Peptides in it, but I think they're talking about the glutamine they know is already present in whey. In any case, it's the amino acid equivalent of squats and deadlifts -it accounts for more than half of skeletal muscle protein by weight, so you can't exactly overdose on the stuff -not if you're following the serving recommendations on the container. As for cost savings... meh. What is it, $.20 a serving??

See? There I go, answering supplement questions twenty miles from the article they pertain to. I see the spirit of Jack Thread is still alive and kicking!

How much glutamine does one need before bed?: I spoon 5g into my casein shake but the ON Casein already has about 5g in it. Can I drop the glutamine powder and save some $?

Well, I run a pretty loose ship around here :P Technically, you don't even really need to sign up to comment, but I do moderate everything on this site. Once you have an approved comment, you can go balls crazy busting my chops but I can still delete anything.

I might take on the Keto craziness in an upcoming article, but I'm actually hoping the fad will burn out before I need to. Some people spend so much time not merely justifying irrational behavior but insisting that it is gospel, that they become too emotionally invested in their cause to think objectively about it. Arguing against Keto with someone who is convinced it's the best thing since the invention of the barbell is like trying to convince a Scientologist that they are batshit crazy.

Truth be told, I'm not feeling terribly Cromtastic or jacked at the moment -been takin' a couple weeks off. But I'll be using my week off to get back on the mass attack bandwagon. Hope you're having a good holiday.

A-HAAA!!! Jack Thread! What up, dawg?! As a matter of fact, you can find the answer to that question in the one and only article I’ve posted so far, LOL!

Truth be told, I’m not feeling terribly Cromtastic or jacked at the moment -been takin’ a couple weeks off. But I’ll be using my week off to get back on the mass attack bandwagon. Hope you’re having a good holiday.
