I agree. The best way to slim down is to GROW UP. Develop a more mature relationship with and viewpoint toward food. Treats are fine for special occasions like parties, company, visits, trips, celebrations, holidays and birthdays but at normal times, anyone who wants a healthy body should take a dose of Vitamin B-Mature and eat normal food, and the way to do that is LEARN TO LIKE FOOD THAT TASTES LIKE FOOD instead of food that tastes like sweets. Not everything is supposed to taste like dessert.
I saw an advertisement for Quaker Chocolate Chip instant oatmeal and I was like -- what the fudge? Since when does breakfast have to taste like chocolate chip? What's the matter with plain old quick oats (not instant) with a little honey and some raisins? Do oats taste so disgusting that they have to be shot up with sugars and artificial goops and made to taste like dessert? Another example of the candification of the American food supply and the infantilization of the American palate.

Excellent post! I know the ad you're talking about and it pisses me off every time I see it. To be honest, I also didn't read into it anything about eating disorders. I just thought to myself, CLOSE THE DOOR, IDIOT! YOU'RE LETTING ALL THE COLD AIR OUT OF THE FRIDGE!

I'm tired of ads that show skinny, airheaded bimbos in size 4 jeans stressing about their diets all the time. And you're absolutely right about substitutions. When you're trying to lose weight, you need to change your whole lifestyle and attitude toward food, and that means learning to like healthier options, not grasping at half baked "replacements" for all the habits that made you fat in the first place.

You can't possibly be a gym rat with perfect grammar like that, lol!

Srsly, a well-written and conversationally-friendly write-up on the basics of getting buff the right way: The way your body was designed to become strong and big, with broad brush strokes and not pixel by pixel. You have to have at least a modicum of faith in this iron game, because much of it seems counter-intuitive. Stay the course by following proven principles and results are pretty much guaranteed with hard, sensible work and attention to the basics. I would add that checking the ego at the door will solve many a problem.

Thanks for an informative article, Brett!

Good workin' out! :)

Brett,
Sorry it's been a while. Are you through with all forums for a while or just with DBB? As MVP says, many good people are now at smound's new forum ironjunkies.com and your presence there would be truly Cromtastic, if you know what I'm saying. Anyway, maybe forums are not your thing these days but I guess to be blunt and pathetic, I miss you, man! I know that's 'gay,' as RS would say, but the honest truth anyway.
