Yeah, I’ve pretty much been artistically inclined my entire life. But I find that people who ask this question typically mean, “when did you notice your art starting to get good?” That’s not so easily nailed down, since (for starters) I don’t think it’s for me to say that my drawing skills are “good” or not. They’re certainly better than when I was doodling in grade school, but I think every artist constantly compares themselves to other artists, and there are many out there who are far better at this than I. As long as I continually improve and try new subjects/media, I’m growing as an artist.
But if I had to put a number on it, I’d say I didn’t really get productive or proficient until after college.
Sorry, country fans, I just can’t do it. But seriously -classical, jazz, metal, pop… whatever strikes my fancy. Most of the time, I just have re-runs of The Big Bang Theory playing in the background.
